Chicago House

Chicago, IL

Located a few steps from the restaurants and shops of Bucktown’s Division Street, this contemporary addition to a turn of the century brick home gave this Chicago family room to grow. The addition includes a family room, kitchen, two bedrooms joined by a jack and jill bath, a recreation room doubling the size of the original house with a deck that opens onto a large outdoor play area.

WC STUDIO organized all of the construction activities and provided many of the interior design details. We used hand sketching to communicate many of our ideas to the millworkers and fabricators. These hand sketches were then discussed, edited and translated into shop drawings and full size templates used to build the metal stair and millwork. Nunzio Fricano of Fricano Construction built and installed the kitchen cabinets and millwork pieces throughout the house. The Stang Lund black walnut wide plank flooring was provided by WD Flooring from Laona, WI. Bill Tellman and Collin Smith of Active Alloys fabricated the three story metal folding “ribbon” stair with walnut treads and glass railings.

The addition was truly a collaboration between owner, architect, builder and subcontractors, each bringing their experience and knowledge together to make this contemporary addition work seamlessly with the existing brick home.
